A fall faun to usher in the season.
First fully analog painting I've done in...15? 20? years? Trying to spend more time away from the Bad Screen™, (re)learning some tricks.
Gouache, uni pin liner, Prismacolor pencil, little bit of Posca white, and a lot of second-guessing.

daily journal post so far!
- sent a stressful text to precede other stressful texts!! stressful adult texts that i’m v afraid of being misunderstood but every 10 seconds i’m like DO NOT WORRY THIS IS NOT AN ISSUE (it is an issue lol and i’m trying to prevent it from becoming a larger issue but text is not the place to convey like. hey i’m legitimately frustrated abt this LOL)
- wore my knee brace and think it only feels ok when i’m standing bc it’s a little pinchy if my leg is bent/if the muscle goes soft at all lol like i don’t think i’d go up a size bc then i’d have to strap it on rly tight and that would then make it too tight again?
- like i had my leg bent in the car and was like why is the blood rushing to my head. why do my ears feel like popping. and i took it off and felt better in that regard. put it on back at home, trying to rule out anxiety making these symptoms appear, and it still kinda did that with my leg straight/elevated, my leg felt A LITTLE tingly but not enough to be like i need to return this. like when i stand and the muscle is tight, it’s not as tight to my skin and doesn’t like, pinch the nerves or compress too tight
- and that’s ok bc i can use the brace for walking around and if i wanna get like, just an ace bandage for sleep i can do that without needing to return this one
- plus i mean. i know i’m not making it up but i know i’m very sensitive to change and stuff that might not be quite right and all that sensory stuff SO even if it doesn’t feel tight, it’s still doing smtn that i want to avoid, even though i want to use the brace and feel it helps and want to use what i paid for lol
- typed out hcs for smtn. i keep calling it “non-important” stuff in my head but like. why. even if it were something i thought i could market, i can’t and won’t LOL like i am allowed to spend my time doing this bc it’s important to me
- got crayola “paint pens” and gouache paint from five below so we know the latter isn’t gonna be quality BUT i’ve never tried that kind of paint so why not get the discount version and test it out. maybe the paint pens will be like cheap poscas lol? i love the poscas i have (mostly yellow ones bc i draw a lot of blondes--all final fantasy has is blondes--and a huge tip white one) but it’d be nice to have a cheaper option if it works ok!
- drinking my matcha latte! i should rly drink the matcha in the house even though it’s like, super potent for no reason??? DD matcha is like i can have a large and i’m ok! at home matcha is like u get a six oz drink and anxiety unheard of from coffee or anything else really
- still woke up after 5 hrs after taking half a clonazepam but i didn’t feel as distraught over it so i think that’ll be my go-to for sleep for now. i get anxious when i take half bc my prescription is just for like .5-1mg or smtn so i can only take a whole one over the course of a day and when i take the half, i like to leave the other half just in case SO i don’t like taking a half when i’m not feeling atrocious ALTHOUGH it’d be nice to like. take it and just bypass feeling horrible until that point? like if i’m having a really rough time, i should just take half bc that is the reason i’m taking it????
- like i’m usually taking half when i panic or when i’m having prolonged anxiety that almost becomes panic, then saving the other half for later--when i should be taking a half. period. and saving the half for later lol. not waiting to take anything at all
- kinda wanna get a cute choker i saw + a cute lil. what would u call it. a chain necklace? like clunky colorful links--beadlike almost. but the choker has a bell and i’m not confident enough for it/it’s simple but any lace is probably too fancy for my usual clothes??? like the necklace would make more sense but hngnhn Cute items...

After many practising and sketching trees , I’ve done my first project piece learning how to use guache. I loved learning guache so much because of the way it turns out having such a nice pastel look to it. it reminded me of Posca markers too and I will definitely continue more with this. I ended up adding detail with white pen to make the trees look more cartoony.
Try Not to Think of Gouache as Watercolour
Though gouache and watercolour have a number of overlaps and similarities, they really shouldn’t be conflated in application.
Too much water makes it look like watercolour, and too little water can lead to cracking on the paint surface after it dries out. The consistency of the paint is very important also I learnt synthetic paint brushes tend to work better for gouache painting compared to natural brushes.
When working with multiple layers of gouache paint, always make sure that the base layer has completely dried out before beginning a new layer, this is important because gouache is easily reactivated with water, so if the base layer has not dried out completely then the next layer will bleed into the base layer creating muddy colours. Drying only takes a few minutes.

Moonlight Mandala
Hello, unexpected experimentation :D I'm chipping away at other, bigger projects that won't be ready for a little while longer, but I've had a fairly decent upload rhythm lately and I don't really want to break momentum so I whipped this up fairly quickly last night to fill the slot. I've had a mandala grid (think, essentially, a circular grid; you can find a few dozen variations if you Google "mandala grid") printed out for quite some time now, sitting in my swatch/resource book and waiting to be used. After cycling through some ideas--among them a "quick" Animal Crossing thing since that's topical right now (which I tried and turned out to not be very "quick" at all, which is why this is here instead, but perhaps I'll revisit that idea some other time), watercolor, gouache, and desperately wishing I had a set of paint pens/posca markers on hand because I've been really wanting to try playing with those lately, I remembered that the Gelly Roll Moonlight pens are fairly opaque and paint-like for gel pens, and I very briefly considered trying a paint-marker type illustration on a much smaller scale with them before remembered the aforementioned mandala grid and also realizing I could use some of this toned-gray paper, too! For context, the gray paper is nice, but I don't use it very much because it can be hard to see lines that aren't particularly thick or black through it, even using my lightbox on the brightest setting. It's just not usually very practical for me. But the mandala grid has nice, thick black lines so I didn't have that problem here. So I cut the gray paper down to size (it's 9" x 12" in the sketchbook, I cut it down to 8.5" x 11" so it would fit the grid and my scanner better), picked out four Moonlight Gelly Rolls, the Classic Black Gelly, and my white Uni-ball Signo, taped the grid to the back of the paper, and then got to work. Honestly, there's not much to describe about the process of actually drawing the mandala. I started in the center and worked my way out, alternating colors as I went and trying to pick shapes/motifs that I thought worked with whatever I already had. I did do a little back-and-forth where I'd do a new ring/row and then go back to add a little to previous ones, but the biggest change I made was simply when I would go back and fill spaces in with color and a couple of times when I added dots/lines to fill space. I have some adult coloring books that focus on mandalas, as they tend to be one of my favorite types of things to color, and a few of them go into greater detail about the origins of mandalas, specifically mentioning how they're supposed to be very meditative and symbolic creations and it's more about the process of making them than the end result (if I remember correctly, traditional mandalas are made with salt/sand and completely brushed away after they've been completed, but don't quote me on that). And I have to say, drawing this one out was pretty meditative for me. I don't think I'd go so far as to say relaxing, necessarily, at least not any more than making art usually is relaxing for me, but it did set my mind at ease a bit after a day that didn't start off the greatest. (Not the worst, either, but not the greatest.) If nothing else, it was pretty fun and relatively quick. (I think it took a little over an hour because I got interrupted a few times and I'm sure I was going a bit slower because this was my first time doing this.) I think on a subconscious level, one of the reasons I've been avoiding trying to draw a mandala, despite having the idea in the back of my mind for at least as long as I've had the grid printed, is because I'm usually not a fan of very technical drawing that relies heavily on perfect symmetry/spacing/geometry to look right. (Contrary to what my sea of swatch charts might have you believe.) Mandalas are usually so structured and perfectly lined down to the last dot; I think I was worried that even using the grid it would still come out looking horribly wonky if I did it by-hand, traditionally, and without the aid of digital symmetry tools. Much to my relief, because of the circular design, the lines draw your eye outward and around so that, while yes it is definitely wonky in some places, it's a lot harder to notice. It still looks really pleasing and the mistakes don't stand out as much. This is very encouraging for me. Also, I have to point out that I think a lot of areas with the white stripes and black dots look almost like buttonholes and thread, which is a really cool effect I hadn't planned on. I actually was going to add more white lines to the outer most "white ring" connecting to the black dots, but after I did the ones you see here, I noticed the button/thread thing and decided to leave it like that instead, and I'm still very happy I did. Honestly, this makes me want to do more experimenting with mandala-making, especially at times like this one where I could really use something relatively simple to make to fill out my upload schedule. Gives me an excuse to use up this gray paper, too, why not? So there's a good chance there will be more of these from me going forward. Especially considering that Sakura just came out with 15 new Moonlight colors that I very much want to get my hands on at some point ____ Artwork © me, MysticSparkleWings ____ Where to find me & my artwork: My Website | Commission Info + Prices | Ko-Fi | dA Print Shop | RedBubble | Twitter | Tumblr | Instagram

hey fam what kinds of markers/watercolors/etc for traditional art do you use??!! sorry if you've answered this before! I just rly wanna know! 💛
i have the full list of the supplies i use in my faq! and ive made a post with the supplies i use for inking (+pictures) but i havent done one for my paints/markers yet and ive recently expanded my supplies a bit so! why not! :o putting this under cut press f for mobile users
watercolors:
i used to only go for Marie’s gouache & watercolor sets. i got them for pretty cheap in a variety store in my hometown and they come in tubes. the overall paint quality is pretty nice but the tubes burst easily and the paint dries up to the point where u cant squeeze any out
(i lost the lid of the watercolor set somehow)
but ive recently started using the sketchers’ pocket box from winsor & newton more!! its a neat little set and i love how the limited palette pushes me to get better at mixing colors
markers:
i mainly use winsor & newton’s promarkers!!! i love the way they layer but they do bleed through the page A LOT so that’s sth to look out for!! here’s the colors i own (cool grey 1-5, black, V518, B119, M428, G338, O555 (brush tip!!!!))
and i got some posca markers im dying to get to know better!!! the colors i own are pink, light pink, sky blue, yellow and white!
#excuse the sorry state of my nails im way overdue some new acrylics dhgd aha#but anyway i hope this helped!!!#;not drawn#Anonymous#;answered

Women’s Rights Posters Print
(ADD IN PHOTOS OF PAPER AND CANVAS VERSIONS OF PRINT!)
I have recently been very inspired by the poster, signs, placards and banners that can be seen a modern-day women’s marches. In order to get a message across, regardless of the message, signs paraded at marches and protests often have an angry and aggressive feel, though there is always a presence of hopefulness and optimism. There are often buzz or stock phrases that are repeated in feminist pop culture that are often featured on signs at women’s marches and feminist protests such as “smash the patriarchy” “fight like a girl” “nasty woman” “girl power” and “yes we can” Sometimes when isolated, these phrases can feel a little weak or even false; but when placed together in a collection of angry, powerful and optimistic phrases, the effect is very different. I wanted to create the effect of lots of different posters, signs and banner within a single piece that could be displayed as a banner.
I started with a simple ink drawing which can be seen in the first image of the above post. To give these posters a sense of both uniqueness and uniformity I used varying sizes and type font but used a limited colour palette which I admittedly already favour of red, white and black. I then scanned the drawing in and made some tweaks of the spacing on photoshop, flipped the images and printed it out to be A1. I then used the carbon method to transfer the image and used posca acrylic markers to ensure the edges of the letters and line were crips before carving out the negative space.
As this piece was so large I decided to use the mono printing press to ensure that the image was fully transferred and the ink was really graphic and opaque. My first attempt resulted in the paper crumpling as I made the mistake of placing the paper on top of the lino. I then created one version of the print on paper which I then added the red areas with a red acrylic marker and one version on canvas, using gouache to add the red accents. I also wanted to experiment with contrasting the angular, graphic and angry nature of the posters with a traditionally feminine floral fabric. I think this contrast is really effective and I think it really provides some commentary on the link with domesticity and traditional female gender roles (as the fabric definitely connotes curtains) with radical feminism.

Fly By the Stars
This is one of the two test pieces I made while I was working on Light in the Darkness, my tribute artwork for Qinni. This was actually the first one I made, where I was trying to figure out if this constellation idea would even work when done traditionally. Originally, I tested various white art supplies (a crayon, pencils, a glitter marker, gel pens, etc.) to see what watercolor paint would do with them. Maybe unsurprisingly, the crayon resisted the watercolor the best when I painted over it, but the problem is that the crayon tip isn't as precise or consistent as I'd like, and even if you get the crayon down correctly, the paint easily beads up on it and makes it less of a pure white. To be fair, I think my best bet would've been a white paint pen like a Posca pen, but I don't have any of those. After some smaller tests, I decided to try this larger test of taking a sketch, breaking it down into lines and inking them, painting, and then going back over my hopefully-still-visible lines with a white gel pen, filling in corners and gaps with stars as necessary. And then of course after that, I splattered the whole thing to sell the galaxy/night sky look. Since I didn't feel like drawing up a whole new sketch just to test this when it might not work, I went back through my sketchbooks and grabbed the original sketch I used for Fly By the Moon of a luna moth. (Hence the title; the original moth is luna moth as in moon, this one is made of stars and thus is indirectly stella moth as in stars.) I did discover a few things here to keep in mind going forward; For starters, I was better off using a ruler to make the lines rather than free-handing them. The lines here don't look bad, but some of them are definitely a little more curved than they should be. Similarly, a lot of the spaces I left were too small to comfortably fit stars and the lines overall don't feel quite as structured as they should, since I didn't plan out how they would work ahead of time. However, it was encouraging that this was my Strathmore 400 series watercolor paper (good quality but not 100% cotton) and I didn't have too much trouble getting the paints to blend and work together the way I wanted to without 1. covering up my initial black ink lines so much that I couldn't see them, and 2. nasty back runs/harsh edges/etc. I did have to go back and forth with the paints and do a few layers, but that and blending them and getting the right color balance where I wanted it turned out to be a little easier than I had thought it would be. This piece also taught me that I needed to be a little more confident when using the white gouache to splatter. The paint has to be thin enough it splatters easily, but not so thin that it's hard to control and doesn't produce a lot of color. Other than that, though, there's really not much to this piece. It's pretty simple, but then again it was just a test. Of course, once I finished this one I still had a few questions, which is where the other test piece I did comes into play, but we'll talk about that when the second test painting is posted. Should be my very next upload, but we'll see! ____ Artwork © me, MysticSparkleWings ____ Where to find me & my artwork: My Website | Commission Info + Prices | Ko-Fi | dA Print Shop | RedBubble | Twitter | Tumblr | Instagram
